THE Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber is appealing to businesses, who are set up to do so and meet the relevant requirements, to help accelerate the drive to increase the number of people vaccinated.
“The vaccination roll-out to date has been disappointingly slow to such an extent that not even 1% of the population in Nelson Mandela Bay has been vaccinated,” said Denise van Huyssteen, CEO of Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber
“With 358 501 cumulative vaccinations administered as of 30 June in the province, the government needs to accelerate the process to ensure that more people receive their dosages. Additionally, this will help our local economy to return, much sooner, to increased levels of economic activity.
“As the Chamber, we strongly believe that the business sector would play a meaningful role in supporting government efforts with the acceleration of the vaccination roll-out.
“We also welcome the fact that the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium will soon be established as a vaccination site with plans to vaccinate 5 000 people per day, seven days a week.
“With the new variant reportedly more easily transmitted, it has the potential to infect a large number of people and place a greater strain on the metropole’s already overburdened public healthcare system.
“To this effect, as the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, we would like to make an appeal to all businesses to ensure they continue enforcing all required COVID-19 safety protocols to protect the health and safety of their employees and customers,” said Van Huys-steen.
“We cannot allow complacency to set in at this critical time when every possible effort needs to be made to prevent the spread of the virus.”
