The South African beach wrestling championships event is coming to town.
The announcement was made by the EP president, Wouter Nell, that this popular event will be held at The Willows resort on 28 and 29 March 2026.
“We are absolutely delighted with the news that our application was accepted.
“It is not only a big honour for EP, but it will also save our wrestlers plenty of money for travelling and accommodation. Now we have home ground advantage,” he said.
This will be the second national beach championship after the first-ever one was held in Richards Bay last year.
Our presentation to the national body included beautiful aerial photos with the help of my secretary, Anelies Botha. We also focused on the facilities available at The Willows.
Nell said that approximately 150 wrestlers were in action in Richards Bay, but he expects the number to double.
“I won’t be surprised if we get 250 to 300 wrestlers at The Willows.
“Even Namibia has indicated that it will enter a team. As we did not get any support from the municipality, I have decided to stage the event at a private resort,” he said.
The last national wrestling championship in Gqeberha was held in the late 1970s.
Nell said EP will hold trials and training camps before the final team is announced.
