An 11-year-old girl died last night, February 28, when she was hit by a car on Rocklands Road just outside Kariega.
According to the 39-year-old driver of a red Toyota Tazz, he was driving on this road in the direction of Kariega just before 19:00, when he noticed children walking on the pavement.
He allegedly decreased speed but said that when he was close to them, two children suddenly ran across the road. One of them allegedly turned back and that is when the accident took place.
Police spokesperson, Capt. André Beetge, said that the girl, Maria Makwena, passed away at the scene.
“A culpable homicide case was opened at Kariega SAPS. The South African Police Service wishes to remind our communities to not let children walk or play unsupervised at or close to busy streets,” Beetge said.
