GAMBLE Street Secondary School is entering a new era with the appointment of their new principal.

The previous principal, Ann Radcliffe retired at the end of 2019, after 37 years of service at Gamble Street. The Department of Education has appointed Ian Balie as principal from 1 January 2020.

Balie previously was at St Colmcille Secondary in Kirkwood.

Gamble Street is challenged with infrastructure, but Balie believes that despite this it will perform at the highest level.

The school is unique in its location as they serve learners from all communities in and around Uitenhage. The school currently has an enrolment of 1 380 learners and a staff complement of 43 teachers.

The boys hostel is in the process of being renovated and the girls hostel currently has 94 learners.

The school offers five languages in order to accommodate the diverse communities it is serving. – REPORTER
