Five people were instantly killed, and three others seriously injured in an apparent head-on-collision which took place early on Friday, May 26 on the R75 in the direction of Jansenville approximately 1km from the R336/R75 T-junction towards Glenconnor.
According to police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, it is alleged that on the mentioned date, at about 17:00, police responded to an accident on the R75 which involved two bakkies, a white Isuzu with a canopy and a H100 Hyundai bakkie which was found lying on the side of the road.
“Five people died on the scene while two women and a man were transported to the Provincial Hospital in Kariega,” said Naidu.
“At this stage it is unclear how the accident occurred. The Isuzu bakkie was travelling towards Jansenville loaded with stock and the Hyundai bakkie was travelling towards Kariega.”
Naidu said two men and a woman in the Isuzu bakkie and a man and woman in the Hyundai bakkie died.
She said the next of kin of the deceased are still being traced and names will be released once a formal identification is done.
Naidu further said police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
