When it was time to celebrate Lyn Cronning’s 74th birthday, she said no gifts please, if you want to give, give something that will make an animal happy.
And this message her dear friends from the Walmer 8th Avenue Bowling Club took to heart. So much so, that the boot of a VW Golf was filled to the top with dog and cat food, all of which was donated to the Uitenhage & District SPCA.
Liz Williams, one of her bowling friends said, “Lyn invited all of us bowling ladies for a tea party, with the clear understanding that she did not want any gifts.
“But it would be appreciated if the ladies could donate cat or dog food which would then be donated as a birthday gift to pets in need of good homes.
“I thought that was a lovely gesture from a lovely person who loves animals.”
Running low on food
Deirdre Swift from the Uitenhage & District SPCA said this birthday gift donation could not have come at a better time as they are running low on tinned food and especially Catmore kitten pellets.
“With the kittens we use the same brand. If we use too many different kinds, they get runny tummies. The basis of their feeding is the Catmore kitten pellets and then if we get anything else we do a little bit of a mix.
“When dogs come in, they sometimes do not eat very well as they are stressed. Then we must encourage them to eat, and most are not familiar with eating pellets as they have been scavenging or have eaten table food.
“So, we put tinned food with the pellets and then obviously we wean them off the soft food eventually to eat only the pellets.
“A big thank you to Lyn and all the bowling ladies who so generously donated to the SPCA. Each tin of food or bag of pellets is needed and makes a difference in the lives of these cats and dogs,” said Swift.
