The public are invited to help do their part with alien clearing and beach clean-ups organised by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa.
According to Prof. Lorien Pichegru, Acting Director of the Institute for Coastal and Marine Research at Nelson Mandela University, these efforts by volunteers have made “very noticeable improvements in the areas, and it is gratifying to see the impact already made in trying to prevent the spread of the Acacia cyclops (Rooikrans/Red Eye) on the dunes.”
WESSA’s next alien clearing will be 10 September, 8 October, and 12 November (09:00 till 11:00). Volunteers need to bring their own bow saw or lopper (if possible), hat, water, gloves. For more information contact Teresa on 060 974 7551.
WESSA’s next beach clean-up will be jointly organised with the Zwartkops Conservancy at the Bluewater Bay swimming beach on Saturday 27 August from 09:30 to 10:30. Bags will be supplied, but please remember to bring hats, sunscreen, water, and gloves if possible. For more information contact Jenny of the Zwartkops Conservancy on 082 853 0700 or Gary of WESSA on 071 610 2884.
