WHILST Nelson Mandela Bay metropole’s water is running out fast, the South African Weather Service confirmed that the January and February 2021 period is heading to be the driest on record since 1900.
Garth Sampson, from the South African Weather Service’s Eastern Cape Region said after a disastrously dry January 2021, the start of February has been equally dry in Nelson Mandela Bay.
“If we do not receive around 10mm before the end of February, Port Elizabeth Airport would experience the driest combined figure for January and February on record (1900 to 2021),” said Sampson.
“With the short term forecast showing no major rains in the next few days and the seasonal forecast showing no clear signal for above or below normal rainfall, the future is looking dismal.”
This is especially in view of the fact that the NMBMM combined dam levels have dropped to a total of 18.08% (by Monday) and are dropping at a rate of just under 0.5% per week.
