PROGRESS Rugby Club kicked off the 2020 rugby season on the same high note at which they ended off late last year.
The club continued with its unbeaten streak and had the good fortune to finish the business that they couldn’t do owing to other clubs’ issues.
During last year, the club qualified legitimately to play in the 2019 EPRU Twizza Super League final. This the club achieved by being unbeaten and beating neighbours Gardens in the semi-final.
Progress was scheduled to play Park Rugby Club in the final, but a dispute of an ineligible player resulted in the final never being played between Progress vs Park/PE Harlequins.
Despite Eastern Province Rugby Union making the right decision to declare Progress the champions, doubters questioned it because no final was played, although the club won all their matches last year.
Good fortune, however, had it that Progress was scheduled to play both Harlequins and Park during week one and two of the 2020 Eastern Cape Super 14 Club Competition.
On Friday, January 17, Progress opened the season by beating the PE based Harlequins by 28-19.
Last Saturday, Progress travelled to PE to take on Park at their Londt Park homeground. The final score was a Progress win of 21-17.
With this Progress retained its unbeaten status and also had a good start to the new competition. These wins sort of finally dismissed the two clubs’ and others’ claims that Progress were champs “only off the field”.
This Saturday Progress will travel to East London to tackle the other unbeaten and top of the section (EC Super 14) log leaders Ncera Leopards – they have 10 points whilst Progress have nine (9).
