THE station commander of Despatch police, Lieutenant Colonel Flip de Jager, retired at the end of January 2021, after 42 years of loyal and dedicated service to his community.
In a statement issued by the police, it is said that Lt Col De Jager leaves a positive mark in the organisation, and in particular to the SAPS members with whom he had worked closely.
“He displayed a high level of professionalism, compassion and dedication in performing and executing his duties as a police officer and a station commander, who served his community with honour and pride.”
Through his career journey he had worked at Despatch, Willowmore, the Uitenhage District Commissioner’s office, the Area Commissioner’s office in Uitenhage and finally as a Station Commander of Despatch police station. When asked what inspired him to join the police in November 1978, he simply answered, “It was my biggest dream to become a police officer. I wanted to make a difference in my community.
“Whenever I saw a police officer or police vehicle as a youngster, I thought to myself that I also wanted to become a member of the South African Police Service.
“I am grateful that I had the opportunity to live my greatest dream and am blessed that the Lord has kept me safe throughout the 42 years. I can now happily retire and spend my time with my family,” said Lt Col De Jager.
Acting Mount Road Cluster Commander, Brigadier Thandiswa Kupiso wished Lt Col De Jager a well-deserved retirement.
“The organisation as well as the community of Despatch has lost a very dedicated and passionate police officer who always flew the police flag with distinct honour and pride,” said Brigadier Kupiso. “He was a person who arrived at work the earliest and left when he was satisfied that everything was in order. I had the pleasure of working with this exceptional officer when I was the Station Commander of SAPS Despatch. He was my right hand person and I could rely on him at any time of the day or night.
“While my heart is very sore at seeing such an exemplary officer close the door of his police career for the last time today, I wish him everything of the best as he opens the next door and walks into a new chapter of his life, which is retirement.
“Go well our good and faithful SAPS colleague, it is time to relax and enjoy the fruits of your hard earned working career,” said Brigadier Kupiso.
