BE wary of unscrupulous con artists operating in Despatch.
This warning from the Despatch police comes after an innocent and unsuspecting member of the public was allegedly conned out of his cellphone and belongings by three neatly dressed persons, one of which allegedly claims to be a police officer.
According to police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart, the victim said he was approached by an unknown man who posed as a police officer investigating a robbery case. The victim is then requested to leave his belongings with the conman (police officer) and go to two other police officers who also are conmen. When the victim reaches the two officers they disappear into the crowd and on return to the first officer, discovers that he has also disappeared, with the victim’s belongings.
“The public are warned that these persons are using the SAPS name to swindle innocent citizens out of their belongings and their hard-earned money.
“The police will continue to detect and investigate anyone involved in the organized syndicates trying to enrich themselves by stealing from others,” said Captain Swart.
- Anyone with knowledge of such conmen is urged to report it to Despatch SAPS on 041 933 8800 or SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or send tip-offs on MySAPS App.
