LITHA Adam from Despatch thoroughly enjoyed the privilege to participate in the milestone 50th anniversary of the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens’ U/19 division.
The tournament, with exciting initiatives to engage with tournament visitors and fans of all ages over the three-day event, was held at the famous Sevens Stadium. It was the largest and most action-packed event on record with over 50 000 fans watching more than 900 rugby and netball matches across the three days.
Litha is an exciting sevens rugby player and captained the EP sevens 2019 team. He and fellow Grey Port Elizabeth sevens players Daniel Wolf, Jared Kirsten and Leo Wolf were invited by KZN Barbarians to represent South Africa at the international sevens U/19 division in Dubai.
“Our Grey PE sevens team earlier this year participated in a sevens tournament at St Stithians Boys’ College in Johannesburg and that is where the KZN Barbarian selectors saw us,” said Litha, who matriculated at Grey Port Elizabeth this year. It was an overwhelming experience to see all the famous rugby players and even coaches in some kind of casual way. Actually it felt like a dream, and you have to pinch yourself and say, hey this is for real.”
Litha enjoyed the opportunity to meet Siya Kolisi, Springbok captain and also a former Grey PE pupil.
“Siya came to speak to us at school and it was very inspiring. Afterwards he asked for four guys to come and take a picture with him, I did not hesitate for a second. It was amazing to have met him, he really is a role model to many,” said Litha.
They ended 4th out of 20 teams which participated in the Dubai Rugby Sevens U/19 division.
Litha wishes to pursue a professional career in property development, but is also sought after for his exciting rugby skills.
His dad Sandile Adam said, “Litha is talented, but one cannot predict ones future. Therefore we want for him to have a balanced life. Education is the highest priority, but we also acknowledge the importance of rugby as a professional career.”
