Police in Kariega are warning members of the public, who may be continuing to contribute to a perception that crime is on the increase by reporting false cases and wasting police resources, that they will face the full might of the law.

Thorough investigations by SAPS Uitenhage members into the circumstances of a theft of a motor vehicle led to the arrest of a suspect, unfortunately the same suspect who was the one to falsely report the case to the police. The 46-year-old man went to SAPS Uitenhage on 16 March at about 19:00, claiming that his vehicle, a white Renault that had broken down on the R75 outside Kariega was stolen.

“Eager to solve the case, Uitenhage Crime Prevention members followed up on all leads and with the assistance of a witness, information ultimately led them to the complainant being the offender,” said police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart. “Confronted with the evidence, the suspect admitted that his vehicle was never stolen and that he had hidden his vehicle in a discreet area and fabricated the incident.”

The 46-year-old male was arrested and charged with perjury on his appearance in the Kariega Magistrate’s Court last Friday.

The acting Station Commander of SAPS Uitenhage, Colonel André Swart commended the team for their excellent investigation skills and for ensuring that those who break the law are brought to book.
