WHAT started out as a dream in a garage at home two decades ago has since flourished into a thriving family business. So much so that Stegmann & Son Monumental Works is now celebrating its 20th year.

According to owner Mario Stegmann, he and his father started the business together in 1999. His youngest brother, now co-owner, Elton Stegmann, also joined the business later on.

“We’ve been in this shop for about 17 years. We worked from home for three years and built up quickly from there,”Mario said. “My father worked in the industry for more than 40 years before opening his own business. We learned everything from him.”

The team of dedicated individuals create beautiful tombstones from the raw materials. And though they use modern technology to engrave the tombstones, they are one of the few enterprises left that can do it by hand as well.

After their father’s passing in 2006, he left Elton with the gift of engraving.

Stegmann & Son Monumental Works covers quite a bit of the Eastern Cape as well, including Graaff-Reinet, Kareedouw, Humansdorp, Cradock and Somerset East.

“Its our name and the quality we offer people that have carried us. Today, we do our work with the same love and passion that we started out with years ago. And this is where the quality, and the pride, comes from,” Mario said.

“Our slogan – “Shaping memories in Stone” – is just a few words, but when you think about it, its actually someone’s background, their life that we engrave in stone and we do this with pride.”
