THE police in Kariega are encouraging businesses to take preventative measures to successfully combat robberies. This appeal comes in the wake of various armed robberies which took place over the past few months in the Kariega policing area.

“Business robberies are rarely committed by one person. There are usually two or more suspects and the security guard or guards on duty are easily overpowered,” said police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart.

“Therefore, by adhering to and taking heed of security tips, business robberies can be minimized, and prevention of further losses experienced by owners will be stopped. Let us support each other in the fight against crime.”

To protect business assets, owners are advised to take the following precautionary measures:

  • It is vital to increase and improve security at stores hence the installation of modern and hi-tech security features is a positive deterrent for criminals. Surveillance cameras should be strategically placed within the store in such a way that the entire store can be seen. Make sure that patrons can be clearly visible on the cameras and that cameras are always working.
  • Premises must be well-illuminated, both inside and out.
  • Extra vigilance and security should be taken during opening and closing times. Avoid giving the responsibility to one person when opening or locking up the business.
  • Panic buttons both static and on persons should be considered as this allows for immediate activation of the security company and law enforcement.
  • Avoid the accumulation of large amounts of cash in tills. Consider drop-safes as a safety option.
  • Special attention should be given when banking and transporting cash. Keep only the amount of cash needed to conduct normal business and/or deposit the money immediately. Never keep large amounts of cash in a safe that is on the premises.
