Muir College is undoubtedly the oldest boys’ high school in South Africa, tracing its origins back to 1822 when a Scottish educationlist, James Rose Innes MA (King’s College, Aberdeen), established the then Uitenhage’s first free government school on 12 October, with 60 pupils.

So, 2022 marks the celebrations of Muir College’s Boys High School’s 200th year and the Muirite recently was abuzz with the launch of Dr Charles van Renen’s 200-year commemorative book, “Shout till the Rafters Ring 1822 – 2022”.

With Robert Sharman acting as the Master of Ceremonies, the evening got off to a fine start. In his address, Dr van Renen explained how the book came together, giving guests insight into the whole process as well as encouraging them to delve further into the history of Muir College. Sigi Howes, former Principal of Conservation Education in Wynberg, Cape Town, wowed guests with her fascinating presentation on Heritage and Schools.

Thomas Terblanche thanked all involved on behalf of the Old Muirite Union. Muir College headmaster, Robin Stephenson thanked all the sponsors by presenting them with a copy of the new book. These included George Yerolemou from Acoustex, Chris Roelofse from Pickwick Books, Siyolo Dick from Spar, Henry Jordaan from Standard Bank and Riaan Claassen from Universal Equipment.

Special thanks were also given to Magriet Kruger from the publishing firm, Tip Africa, as well as Kieran Stear, Principal of Riebeek College and Margaret van Renen.

The evening ended with a resounding version of the College Song, led by Old Muirite, Ian Krain.

The book, “Shout till the Rafters Ring” is available to purchase from Thoriso M-Afrika on 041 966 1147 or marketing@muircollege.co.za
