“We are entering a vicious winter and the SPCA does not have enough beds and blankets to keep the animals warm at night.”

This message was sent out by the Uitenhage & District SPCA on their social network pages, as they are in desperate need for blankets, towels, pillows, or any pieces of material or even bathroom or door mats.

There has been a sudden increase in people surrendering their pets and animals and Deirdre Swift from the Uitenhage SPCA said the reasoning behind this is the socio-economic disaster due to COVID-19 and job losses as well as the fact that the local SPCA takes in far more animals than any of the other welfare organisations in the region.

“People are really struggling and cannot afford to feed their cats and dogs. Some bring in their pets and surrender them. Others are not so responsible and just let their pets survive on their own. That is why the number of strays is increasing by the day,” said Swift.

“Basically, these animals then become our property and we need to find good homes for them. The SPCA kennels are chock a block now and there are not enough beds and blankets.”

The SPCA is in dire need of specifically the grey Stormy blankets which are available from Pep Stores and Ackermans.

“Please think of the poor dogs and cats that must endure the terrible cold at night and see if you have anything that you can donate to help improve their quality of life. It does not matter if they are old and torn blankets or towels, they will be used.”

  • Donations can be dropped off at the SPCA in Schonland Street or at the SPCA Charity Shop at 19 Rich Street or else call Deirdre on 083 415 5181; 041 992 3016 or 041 922 4528.
