“I’m still the Max I was prior to becoming a world champion bodybuilder. But being a professional now, I must be mindful, respectful, and always behave like an ambassador and role model of the sport.”

This is according to Macethandile “Max” Kulati, a disabled bodybuilder from the impoverished Moeggesukkel in Kariega, who was crowned world champion earlier this year in Koper, Slovenia where he represented South Africa at the 2022 International Bodybuilding & Fitness Federation World (IBFF) championship.

“I now have a public persona which I need to take care of. One simple decision can strip me of my professional card. That includes what I post on my Instagram and Facebook pages.”

Max next year has two international competitions to attend. He needs to defend his IBFF title in either Slovenia or Italy, and he wants to compete in the IFBB Mister Universe bodybuilding competition.

“I need to change my physique drastically from amateur to that of a professional. For an unemployed person with no income, it is a huge challenge as I need specific nutrition and supplements which are expensive.”

However, he is very grateful for sponsorships from local businessman Conrad Bester from CB Automotive; Indigo Health and Sport Supplements; as well as Psycho Skull Supplements ZA of which Max is a brand ambassador.

Apart from the international competitions that Max must prepare for, he also has been invited to the 2022 All Africa Cup Bodybuilding competition in Pretoria on 24 September.

“This competition is close to my heart. It was at this event during 2021 where I won and was invited to Slovenia and eventually earned my world champion bodybuilding title.

“This time I will not compete but will attend as an ambassador and presenter.”

For Max to be able to attend this event, a fundraising bingo will be held on Saturday at Limekhaya High School, Maduna Road, 15:00. Two full house 10 rounds at R60 per ticket. Free refreshments served. Tickets will be at the door or phone Maureen Pullen at 073 604 5596 or Elvida Klue 072 277 9623.

Maureen Pullen, dr. Arnold Johannes, and Elvida Klue became known as Team Max, for their continuous support and making it possible for Max to go to Slovenia.

“Team Max is the best team ever. They took me from nothing to something. I will for as long as I live be thankful for their true support,” said Max.
