The Uitenhage ladies premier league team was crowned as the winners of the Eastern Province hockey league. They won a hotly contested league, edging out Gelvandale hockey club.
The Uitenhage ladies’ hockey team was promoted into the premier league in 2012, where they quickly learnt how tough it would be to compete at the top level, achieving only one win and one draw in the season. The persistence of the then coach, Iris Vaghi, saw the team improve year on year, as they attracted top quality players to the club. They were able to finish second in the league in 2019, and with the result of the COVID-19 pandemic, no hockey season was played in the 2020.
In the 2021 season, which was disrupted by the third wave of the pandemic, the Uitenhage premier team was undefeated, with eight wins and two draws. This is the first time since the unification of the Eastern Province hockey league that Uitenhage has won the ladies premier league. This team was coached by Quintin Levey and captained by Uitenhage Hockey Club President Chantelle Clohessy (Old Riebeek Girl).
The Uitenhage club also has teams in the ladies Presidents and second league. The ladies’ presidents team coached by Nicole Kemp and captained by Vantola Vandayar ended up third in their league, while the ladies second league team coached by Catherine Levey and captained by Marene Fourie won their league and will be promoted to 1st league next year.
