After years of planning, the Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS), known as Libhongolethu, has finally made its way to Kariega and surrounding areas. Construction on the long-awaited expansion is in full swing, marking the continuation of transport improvements aimed at empowering communities and boosting the local economy.
Last month, a street meeting was held in Kamesh Road to discuss road widening for the new bus route.
The next day, construction machinery arrived, bringing the project to life.
Ward 49 Councillor, Georgen Miggels addressed residents, providing updates about the construction and urging caution during disruptions.
“We are confident this development will bring positive change to Kariega and the surrounding areas,” said Councillor Miggels. “Finally, this convenient and affordable transport service will be available for the people of this town. Please be especially careful while driving in Kamesh, particularly near the Lovebird 4-way stop, as construction vehicles are frequently moving through the area.”
The expansion has been in the pipeline for over two years, with extensive preparation and consultation undertaken by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. Late last year, the UD Express reported that key details about the extension were shared with stakeholders, including residents, councillors, the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), and Algoa Bus Company.
At the time, former Member of the Mayoral Committee for Roads & Transport, Councillor Bradley Murray, and Director for Transport, Givon Van Eyk, convened a meeting at the Kariega Council Chambers to discuss the IPTS project. Stakeholders also addressed the service’s integration with the taxi industry to ensure harmony and collaboration moving forward.

SANTACO Eastern Cape President, Songezo Mpanda, applauded the municipality for its efforts, stating, “We are going forward now, there is no turning back. This is a progressive decision that will improve public transport in Kariega and professionalise the taxi industry.”
Libhongolethu, a government-subsidised modern transport system, has been operational in Gqeberha’s Northern Areas for six years under Phase 1A.
Extending this service to Kariega marks the beginning of Phase 1B, which will cover Kariega, KwaNobuhle, and Rosedale. Known for its cost-effectiveness, safety, and reliability, the system empowers the taxi industry, formalising it into a sustainable and professionally managed sector.
The initial service rollout in Kariega will feature nine buses operating from 05:00 to 20:00, with 30-minute intervals covering key routes such as Matanzima, Mabandla, and Ponana Tini Roads, along with Mel Brooks Avenue, Durban Street, Cuyler Street, and Kamesh Road.
The IPTS is a government-subsidised modern transport system aimed at providing a cost-effective, safe, and reliable transport service.
In partnership with the taxi industry, the system seeks to empower and transform the taxi industry into a formal and sustainable transport system.
