IN celebration of Women’s Month a High Tea was held in Kirkwood, hosted by Ilanga Victim Support Centre in conjunction with the government communication and information system department of the Sarah Baartman District as well as the Kirkwood police.

The event was attended by women from the community and it was supported by the Sundays River Women’s Institute, Kirkwood Round Table and various local businesses.

Ilanga is a place of safety for victims of abuse, rape and domestic violence and is situated adjacent to the Kirkwood police station.

Its project manager, Melvin Maarman said, “We are here not only to help women who are victims of abuse and domestic violence, but to be of assistance to all who fall prey to abuse and violence.

“Our basic services include counselling and programmes to inform women as well as children of their basic rights in life. It is of utmost importance that they should know that they should not keep quiet, they need to report cases of abuse.”

Maarman is assisted at the centre by Geraldine Jansen and Carmen Julies.
