WITH the increasing occurrence of violence in South Africa, the impact of human rights has come under question.
Therefore Uitenhage High School wishes with the hosting of its annual Human Race, to reinstall the importance that everyone has the right to live, to be free, and to feel safe.
Event organiser Shaun Petrus from Uitenhage High School, said the 5km Human Race, which will start at 08:00, aims to assist in creating awareness that human rights are equal to all people, all over the world, regardless of their religion, beliefs, nationality and gender.
“With the recent spike of violence in our communities and especially the heinous gender-based violence incidents experienced across our country, not to mention incidents of xenophobic attacks, it is becoming progressively more important that we take stock of our rights as human beings,” said Petrus.
In further support for those affected by violence everywhere, the organisers of the event have requested that participants dress in black attire on the day.
Participants and spectators are also urged to bring along a tin of non-perishable food, which the school will donate to Rosa Munch Retirement Home.
Prizes for the first three positions at the race will be awarded to different age groups with lucky draws also taking place on the day. Registration forms are to be collected and returned to Uitenhage High School at a fee of R10.
