CHRISTO Meiring (67), South Africa’s number one Protea darts player, who was to represent his country at the World Darts Federation World Cup in Romania this year, has passed away.

Meiring, who resided in Despatch, was the oldest competing darts player nationally as well as internationally.

“It is with a sad heart that we at St Croix Darts Association say farewell to Christo Meiring. He was the ‘father’ to all darts players in Despatch, Uitenhage and the Eastern Cape,” said Vernon Human from the St Croix Darts Association where Mei-ring was a member.

Meiring has lost the fight against cancer and passed away on Sunday, September 15.

Meiring was the top ranked darts player in South Africa for more than 20 years and tops in the Eastern Cape for the past 30 years.

It would have been Meiring’s fifth world cup. He previously has represented SA in France, the Netherlands, Australia and Canada.

Darts was his passion and he started playing this sport nearly 40 years ago.

“We will miss our ‘Captain oh Captain’. Christo was the light for us when we went away on tour. He was the life of us and the inspiration to the game.

“Our deepest condolences to the family from all his friends and darting family,” said Human.

  • Christo Meiring’s memorial service will be held tomorrow (Friday, September 20), 11:00, AGS Despatch (at the back of the central rugby fields).
