AS in previous years Solomon Mahlangu High School in KwaNobuhle entered the Youth Citizens Action Programme (YCAP), but this year they for the first time participated for the Sustainability Award.
Loyolo Maxham, a Grade 10 learner, led the team in research and activities which enabled them to further develop the work of the school’s 2018 nutrition programme for which they were crowned the national YCAP winners.
Nelson Mandela University partnered with the school, through its Department of Dietetics’ Community Nutrition Lecturer assigning a final year student to assess the health needs of a number of learners and by creating more awareness of the need to maintain a healthy body.
According to Olwen Carson YCAP coach, both the student and the team held meetings with the ladies who sell food at break.
“The ladies accepted the learners’ feedback that the selling of unhealthy food is not good and undertook to improve their standards,” said Carson.
The team also helped plant seedlings to grow vegetables for the daily nutrition programme at the school. The agricultural project is run by parents at the school. – REPORTER
