OWING to the ongoing drought in the Eastern Cape, one of the Nelson Mandela Metropole’s major dams, the Impofu Dam, has reached critical levels whereby extraction of water is no longer possible.
According to municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki, this scenario has resulted in water deficit.
“The current average metro consumption is approximately 300ML as compared to the system input of about 270 ML,” said Mniki.
“The deficit of 30 ML has caused depletion of capacity in most of our reservoirs and causing intermittent and no supply to most of areas in the metro. The immediate solution will be to cut back consumption.
“In order to account for the deficit in the distribution system, residents and consumers are urged to cut drastically on their consumption,” said Mniki.
The Churchill Dam must overflow first to fill up the Impofu Dam, as they are both located on the Kromme River.
The Nelson Mandela Metro will endea-vor to arrange water tankers where possible.
