OFFICERS and members of Uitenhage K9 Unit, bade farewell to one of its longest serving employees, John Langbooi.
“John Langbooi worked his entire life at the unit and was a dedicated member of the team. He will be solemnly missed by both his human and his four-legged colleagues,” said Captain Gerda Swart, police spokesperson.
John (62) joined the South African Police Service, as a specialized auxiliary service assistant, at the Uitenhage K9 on 1 February 1982.
“He worked with various tracker dog handlers and he also assisted to accomplish many arrests during his career path at the Unit. John managed to build a sound relationship with each and every K9 and he also knew each K9 by name.
“They will surely miss his friendly whistle and daily visit to their kennels to ensure that the dogs receive fresh food and clean water,” said Captain Swart.
During his tour of duty he received a 10-, 20- and 30 years loyal service certificate.
The Unit Commander, Captain Nikki McAuley wished John every success in his retirement years and said: “You are leaving behind a legacy that many of us can aspire to. You are a man of your word, who does what you say and your knowledge and experience at this Unit will be sorely missed”.
After completing 37 years and 334 days of loyal and dedicated service, management and staff at the Unit gathered for this very special occasion to send well wishes as he parted ways with the organisation owing to his superannuation.
