IT is insane, you have to see it, a Toyota Land Cruiser 6×6 which can carry heavy loads across some of the most daunting terrain on earth. This vehicle can be seen at Saturday’s Cars & Coffee show at Speedyquip in North End.
“There are only two of these vehicles in private ownership in South Africa, with one in Port Elizabeth and the other one in Pretoria,” said Derek Elliot, an organiser of the popular Speedyquip Cars & Coffee shows.
“These monster 6×6 vehicles are built in South Africa for the French army. It has phenomenal off-road capabilities and can be used in 2×6, 4×6 or 6×6 mode with a differential lock on all three axles.”
The yellow Land Cruiser 6×6 to be seen on Saturday boasts a V8 diesel 4.5 litre engine and can go anywhere. It belongs to off-road enthusiast and champion Karel Spangenberg from Algoa Steel.
It was built at the Pretoria based 6×6 Africa, where the company converts standard Land Cruisers into these six wheel monsters that can tackle any terrain. The company clinched a contract to supply the French Defence Force with 50 conversion kits to be used as troop, ammunition and water carriers (3 000 litres). They also received an order of 10 of these six wheelers for the Mauritanian government.
It can carry a load three times more than a standard Land Cruiser and has a towing capacity of between five and six tons.
Motoring enthusiasts are most welcome to show their own vehicles at the Cars & Coffee show and enjoy complimentary coffee and biscuits. Whether the vehicle is old, new, classic, customized or exotic bring it to the show which is from 08:00 to 12:00 at Speedyquip, 3 Prince Alfred Road.
