THE Uitenhage People’s Welfare Organisation for the Aged was established many years ago and most of the founder members have already passed away.

The aim of the organisation was to establish an old age home for the aged in Uitenhage. Over the years the founder members worked hard to raise funds. Various institutions and companies were also approached for financial assistance in order to establish an old age home.

Eventually, in February 2015, the dreams of those hardworking men and women of yesteryear, came to fruition when the Uitenhage People’s Old Age Home opened its doors at 11 Innes Street, Mosel.

It is a residence which serves to accommodate persons 60 years and older. Currently there are seven residents, but it can accommodate 12 people.

It is a non-profit organisation, which is self-sustaining and is not subsidised by the state. The residents pay a monthly fee of R1 600, which is the only source of income. This money covers accommodation, three meals a day, afternoon and evening tea. It is also used to give a small stipend to the two care workers, who assist with cooking, washing and ironing as well as cleaning. It is also used to purchase electricity and for the maintenance of the building and the premises.

The Old Age Home for the aged in Uitenhage on Monday received a donation of R4 000.

It was handed over by Rodney Redcliffe on behalf of the Volanie family in memory of their father, Paul Volanie, who passed away during December 2020. He was a former principal, religious leader and a stalwart in the community. The money will most definitely be put to great use, to purchase groceries and for other much needed items.

It is gestures such as these that bring joy and comfort to old age home residents, some in the twilight of their lives, and make it possible to run the old age home successfully.
