THE National Lotteries Commission (NLC) together with Qhagqiwa Football Association (QHAFA) launched the new soccer association QHAFA on Sunday afternoon – by showcasing NLC sponsored soccer gear and equipment worth R1, 9 million.
Seventeen Uitenhage (Kariega) soccer clubs, one from Despatch, are the proud sponsorship beneficiaries. The clubs, which arrived at the Jabavu Stadium to listen to speeches from NLC officials, representatives of QHAFA, Councillor Siphiwo Plaatjies, comprised junior and senior divisions. The event was held in line with strict COVID-19 regulations.
These clubs are Young Callies, Young Killers, Young Pirates, City Style, Mighty Teenagers, Reservoir Strikers (Despatch), Black Vultures, United Brothers, All City Stars, Stokes United, Chelsea, New City Stars, Young Tigers, Garden City, City Friends, Kabah United Brothers and Uitenhage Future Stars.
NLC Eastern Cape provincial manager Mzikayise Mani said, “Not everyone who buys a Lotto ticket wins, but they indirectly contribute through ploughing back to communities, with the sponsorships to creches, old age homes, arts and culture related activities or like in this instance, making sure these soccer players are dressed decently on the field.”
Mani also pleaded with young soccer players to “Stay away from alcohol and drugs. Stick to football and schoolbooks. Respect the elderly, the women and respect yourselves.
“In order to reach the level of international soccer stars like Ronaldo you must be disciplined. They also clung to respect before they became who they are today.”
QHAFA president Mncedisi Hote thanked NLC for the sponsorship as well as all the players who attended the event. Ward 45 Councillor Siphiwo Plaatjies said the municipality will assist where it can in terms of soccer fields that are in ruins.
“I am hoping that there will be an Easter soccer tournament, so that we can see this beautiful soccer gear and local talent in action again.”
