THE conditions of the Cat Canal for years have been unhealthy and unhygienic. Residents living next to the canal are complaining for years about the smell, filth and sewage flowing down the canal, but the conditions have not changed at all.

The canal edges are overgrown and skips in Kabah and Market Street have not been cleaned for quite sometime.

The Eastern Cape Water and Sanitation Department has given clear instructions to the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality, on 21 August 2013, to keep the canals clean.

It’s really unacceptable that ratepayers have to live in these unhygienic conditions. Not one of the health officials responded the last time when I phoned them to report the poor state of the canal.

The government are busy changing names of towns, whilst basic service delivery is lacking and our infrastructure needs urgent attention. A name change won’t change anything for the better for ratepayers.

It’s really unacceptable that Uitenhage’s residents are not receiving the service delivery they are supposed to receive. The last time this town was properly cared for and received top services, was when we had our own officials and municipal budgets.

I therefore call on the officials to come to Uitenhage and look at the poor conditions of the town and put strategies in place so that it again can be the Garden Town as we knew it.

I also call on the Premier and Minister of Arts and Culture and Sport, to reconsider the name changes. The money can instead be used to upgrade and maintain infrastructure.
