A man was arrested yesterday morning, Monday, June 28, after what is believed to be his girlfriend’s body, was found in a pit in Ezinyoka Informal Settlement in Valencia, Addo.
On Monday, June 21, a relative of 30-year-old Zelna Baartman reported her missing after she disappeared the previous weekend. She was last seen in the company of the suspect on Friday, June 18, 2021.
According to police, on Sunday, June 27, the decomposed body, believed to be that of Baartman, was discovered in this pit.
Her 37-year-old boyfriend was subsequently arrested for her murder.
“Investigations revealed that the pit was dug for the construction of a latrine (toilet). A postmortem and DNA analysis will be conducted to confirm whether the recovered body is that of Baartman,” a police report read.
The arrested suspect is due to appear in the Addo Magistrates Court tomorrow, Wednesday, June 30 on a charge of murder.
