SOUTH Africans across the globe are invited to walk 5km or 6 500 steps in an event in support of people affected by cancer. A total of 100 employees from Lumotech in Kariega will, in adhering to all COVID-19 protocols, also participate in this challenge.
On 30th October it will be the 23rd edition of the Algoa Big Walk for Cancer and the second edition of it being a virtual challenge hosted in conjunction with the Eastern Cape Department of Health and managed by Zsports Events SA.
Any location goes, if walks are not mass events, and it should be held between 08:00 and 10:00 and adhere to all COVID-19 regulations.
Maureen Pullen, a Lumotech employee and organiser of the local event in support of the Virtual Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer, said they are over the moon as the company has agreed again to fund employees to participate in the event.
“This year Lumotech’s flags will be hoisted even higher as management has agreed to pay for double the number of participants compared to last year’s 50 entrants. So, there will be 100 Lumotech employees dressed in pink in solidarity with cancer survivors and their loved ones,” said Maureen.
“Whilst participating in the walk, social distancing is of utmost importance as are the rest of the COVID-19 protocols. Our participation also forms part of the company’s wellness programme,” said Maureen.
The Virtual Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer’s support event in Kariega will start and finish at the Uitenhage Cricket Club (opposite the Uitenhage Indoor Sports Centre). Participants need to be there at 07:00 for the start at 08:00.
A 5km route will be followed through the neighbourhood with the support of local traffic autorities. Lucky draws will be held at the finish point.
“It is not only for Lumotech employees. All who have entered for this year’s event are welcome to join us, as long as all COVID-19 protocols are adhered to,” said Maureen.
Maureen wishes to thank Lumotech for agreeing to support the walk, as well as sponsors Deysel Design, Powerline, Dajee’s, Hyper Pneumatics, Hytec, BMG, Microptic & JC’s Juice.
