For weeks sewage has been overflowing in Kariega at Marconi
Street, opposite Kromberg & Schubert and Valeo, as well as at the entrance of
Market Square Volkswagen.
The entrance of VW
Market Square is overflown with sewage.
Councillor Franay van de Linde from Ward 48 said the sewage
overflowing into the properties of these industries, as well as over the Marconi
Street, is a huge health hazard.
She said the reason given by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for the sewage
spill is faulty pumps.
“It is an unacceptable situation and a disgrace to our
industries. For weeks those employed at these industries must deal with the
unbearable smell.
“People can get very sick. We urge the municipality to
urgently intervene and repair or replace all needed to prevent this from
happening again.
“Another concern is that this sewage is now
flowing directly into the Swartkops River,” Van de Linde said.
Sewage and wastewater contain bacteria, funguses and viruses that can cause intestinal, lung, and other infections.
The UD Express approached the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for comment, but they have not responded to our queries.
