A man allegedly trying to steal cables from the roof of a building in Kariega was apprehended by K9 Razor and his handler, Sgt. Vincent Upton at the weekend.

Just before 22:00 on Saturday, October 1, the Kariega K9-Unit was alerted of a suspicious person on the roof of a building in Sellick Street by a security guard on the premises.

Police were told that the person is allegedly attempting to steal power cables.

Police spokesperson, Capt. André Beetge, said that upon the arrival of Sgt. Upton and his dog, Razor, the suspect was spotted on the roof.

“A loud bang was heard as he allegedly attempted to pull the cables. Sgt. Upton commanded the suspect to come down from the roof.  The suspect then jumped down the three-metre-high roof and attempted to flee from the police into an alleyway,” Beetge explained.

Sgt. Upton then used Razor to assist him to make the arrest. The estimated damages caused to the cabling is approximately R5 000.

The 38-year-old suspect was charged with attempted theft of cables as well as malicious damage to property.
