Benjingi, Go-Kan, Moyogi, may all sound like an order for Shusi; however, these are styles for bonsai trees.

The idea that all bonsai trees are small may have been the norm for hundreds of years, but the art has changed with bigger trees making their entrance all over the world. Although trees are larger, bonsai lovers still stick to basic rules, and yes, most serious bonsai lovers want a traditional Juniper or conifer in their collection.

With the vast array of trees available in South Africa, bonsai fans are spoiled with acacia, coral, wild olive, spekboom and even the mighty baobab tree having become favourites. So, no matter what your choice is, there is a bonsai that will suit your style.

Bonsai have been around for 1000’s of years. Proof thereof is a painting in one of the tombs in Egypt of a Pharaoh receiving a bonsai as a gift.

The EP Bonsai Society’s annual Bonsai Show will be held on Saturday and Sunday at Sherwood Garden Centre, Walker Drive Gqeberha. Doors open Saturday 09:00 till 17:00; Sunday 09:00 till 16:00. Demonstrations will be held on Saturday at 10:00 and 13:30, and on Sunday at 11:00 and 13:00. There will also be trees, pots, tools, wire and fertilizer and free advice.

The entrance fee is R20 for adults, R10 per learner and children under 12 years may enter free of charge. For more information contact Jenny at 083 999 1058.
