SAPS Uitenhage is encouraging residents to actively participate in crime prevention by reporting any suspicious activities and taking steps to deter opportunistic criminals.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, it has been noted that crimes such as housebreaking and theft are increasing due to the negligence on the part of some homeowners.

“Crime prevention is a collective effort, and by being proactive, residents can play an active role in creating a safer and more secure neighbourhood,” said Naidu.

Here are some proactive tips for residents to implement in their neighbourhoods:

  • During patrols at night, SAPS Uitenhage police officers noticed that residents place their refuse bags out for collection the following day. This poses a threat as this attracts scavengers at night, potentially leading to other crimes. Residents are urged to take out the rubbish bags on the day of collection.
  • Secure your property – with the so-called ‘panga gang’ allegedly responsible for many housebreakings in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro, including Kariega, owners are urged to lock all doors and windows and ensure that gates and fences are in good condition. Consider installing security systems like alarms and CCTV cameras. Never open sliding doors, even if you are living/sleeping above ground level. Many residents leave these doors open for easy access for their pets at night.
  • Adequate outdoor lighting can deter criminals and assist police during patrols. Install motion-activated lights around your property and in common areas.
  • Consider reinforcing doors and windows with more substantial locks and security bars to make your property less vulnerable to break-ins.

By taking a proactive approach, police can identify and address potential issues before they escalate.
