KARIEGA FLOOD: Body of missing student found

The body of a student, who went missing during the recent floods in Kariega, as well as a car, have been found in the Swartkops River after an extensive search.

Elmari van de Merwe, Assistant Director: Marketing & Communications at Eastcape Midlands TVET College, said in a media statement this morning that the student was Asemahle Mdiniso, a 21-year-old National Certificate (NCV) Level 2 student from Cape Town.

“Asemahle had been reported missing in the aftermath of the severe weather that impacted the town. Her body and the car, which had been reported missing since the flash floods on Saturday evening, June 1, were discovered in the Swartkops River after an extensive search. It is with deep sorrow that we confirm this tragic outcome,” said Van de Merwe.

Express previously reported that Asemahle and a fellow student had been reported missing after they were last seen leaving with a friend whose car was swept away by the recent floods. Fortunately, the friend has been rescued.

According to Van de Merwe, rescue operations will continue today as efforts are made to locate the other female student who is still unaccounted for. “Highly skilled rescue divers remain on the scene, committed to bringing closure to the families affected by this tragedy. Members of the EMC Management, including the Principal and the High Street Campus Manager, were present at the scene when the body was recovered. They provided support to the parents and the rescue team. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Asemahle Mdiniso during this incredibly difficult time,” said Van de Merwe.

“We also wish to express our gratitude to the dedicated rescue teams for their tireless efforts under challenging conditions. Counselling services will continue to be available for students and staff next week to provide the necessary emotional support during this difficult time. The College understands the emotional impact this situation may have and is here to support them in any way possible,” said Van de Merwe.
