August 9 and 10 marks the next exciting leg in the year-long 60th anniversary celebrations of Uitenhage High School.

Over the course of these two days, the various stakeholders will converge on the Derrick Ferreira Stadium to enjoy sports fixtures – rugby, soccer, netball, volleyball, chess, table-tennis and darts are in the line-up – between local and out-of-town secondary and primary schools.

Festivities will commence with a procession starting at New Horizon in Acacia Street on Friday, August 9 at 07:30. The general public is urged to join the procession, escorted by the Community Band and the South African Police Service.

At the stadium, the event will be officially opened at 08:30, with the first matches to kick-off at 09:00 and ending at 17:00.

During the day, the immense sacrifices and contribution of women in the local community will be called into remembrance and acknowledged. Both days will feature a wide variety of food on sale, as well as lots of entertainment.

Apart from the current learners showcasing their talent, spectators can also look forward to witnessing many old boys and old girls (including current staff members) strutting their stuff on the field and court of play.

Attendees will be afforded a last-gasp opportunity to enter the Cash Raffle Draw, totalling a whopping R60 000, coinciding with the school’s 60th anniversary celebrations. The draw is scheduled to take place at the venue on Saturday, August 10 at 15:20.

Daily entrance fees are R5 for learners dressed in their school uniform, R10 for adults and learners out of uniform, and R20 per vehicle. No alcohol, oka pipes or drugs will be tolerated at what promises to be a memorable, community-building event.

  • Save the dates: The remaining events on the celebration calendar include a Gala Evening on September 28, the Cultural Festival on October 11 and 12, a golf day on November 30 and the Thanksgiving church service on December 8.
