SAPS launched the Safer Festive Season Operation at Moses Mabida Township in Nqweba (formerly Kirkwood) recently.

The initiative, led by District Commissioner Major General, Zolani Xawuka, aimed to raise awareness about crime statistics in the Valley, disseminate information about SAPS operations, and fortify partnerships with key stakeholders in the fight against crime.

The operation also highlighted the state of readiness in terms of safety and security ahead of the festive season.

The event saw the attendance of several notable figures, including the Executive Mayor of Sarah Baartman District Municipality, Councillor Deon de Vos, and the Mayor of Sundays River Valley, Councillor Solethu Lucas.

Also present were the Area Commissioner for the Department of Correctional Services, Nombedesho Godo, members of the SRVM Council, senior officials from SAPS, Military Police, private security companies, government departments, and local stakeholders.

Both Mayors expressed their support for SAPS’ efforts and highlighted the importance of community cooperation in combating crime.

They urged residents to collaborate with the police and called on tavern owners to comply with municipal by-laws, noting that most criminal activities occur at night when people are intoxicated. Mayor De Vos issued a stern warning to criminals, declaring, “Your time is running out.”

In his keynote address, Major General Xawuka expressed gratitude for the municipality’s support, emphasising that it would significantly aid their efforts.

He urged community members to take responsibility for their neighbourhoods by reporting illegal foreign nationals residing in the townships and encouraged ward councillors and committees to join the Community Police Forums.

With learners across the country nearing the end of their final examinations, Major General Xawuka voiced concerns about the potential for celebration parties, which often lead to increased crime.

He called on the community to protect young people and discourage the organisation of “pens down” parties. “We all have a responsibility to discourage learners from organising ‘pens down’ parties as these result in young people becoming victims of crime. We will do our best to police these, but we must work together.”

He concluded by announcing plans to strengthen operations in SRVM before the 2025 citrus season to ensure that everyone entering and working in the Valley has the correct documentation.

During the event, SMHART Security handed over an operational plan to Major General Xawuka, further solidifying the collaborative efforts to enhance safety.

The Safer Festive Season Operation is being implemented across all seven local municipalities under the Sarah Baartman District Municipality, marking a comprehensive approach to ensuring a secure and peaceful festive season for all residents.
