A stepfather, Charlton Melvin Andrew Human (52), accused of murdering his stepson Leewin Andrews (18), appeared briefly at the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court on Friday morning, 15 August. The matter was postponed again as the state prosecutor stated that the prosecution still needed to consult with witnesses regarding the incident.

UD Express previously reported that the stepfather was arrested by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Kamesh for allegedly shooting his stepson on 27 May. He faces charges of murder.

The matter was heard for the first time on Monday, 28 May. The accused, Human, chose to abandon his bail application on 5 June, according to National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali. The matter was postponed for further investigation, as was the case again this morning.

The media requested permission to photograph the accused; however, as Human is represented by a private attorney, the presiding judge said permission must also be sought from the private attorney. The attorney said, “While the matter is still under investigation, publishing a photo of my client is not wise,” and the judge ruled in favour of the attorney.

Stepping off the dock, Human looked around the courtroom and greeted Vernolene Solomon Britz, who is Solomon’s aunt and was once his close friend. The greeting was not welcomed by Britz.

The matter was postponed to 23 September for the next hearing at the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court.
