Garden Rugby Club recently demonstrated that rugby extends far beyond the pitch when the community club organised a soup kitchen and outreach programme. This embodied their core belief that rugby is not just a sport but an opportunity to build, groom and nurture future leaders whilst teaching youth valuable life lessons, discipline and resilience.

According to the soup kitchen organiser, Caryn Malgas, “The main objective behind this initiative was not only to give back to our community but also to thank our community and supporters for their loyalty, compassion, devotion and dedication shown towards our leaders and players.”

She added that as Gardens Club continues to honour the legacy of those who built their foundation, this community outreach programme highlights how a club that sees itself as more than just a sporting organisation, but rather as a family, can create meaningful change through collective strength, unity and their unwavering commitment to building and restoring their youth. “The broad community and supporters of Gardens Club highlight how collective strength and harmony lead to success.”

Malgas said, “Our aim was not only to be able to feed those in need but to provide warmth and companionship by dining with those in need, reminding ourselves where we come from and the diversity thereof.”

She added that rugby to the club is more than just sport, but an opportunity to build. “Gardens Club has always been more than just a club; Gardens Club is a family.”

Their main objective going forward is to continue to give back to their community and they firmly believe that they will be able to do more of this. “We are fully committed to building and contributing to restoring our youth,” she said as the club intends to have this soup kitchen regularly.

Organiser said they intend on doing this more often, especially after seeing the extensive need for these initiatives. Photo: Supplied
