Two years ago, Zhongwei Liao entered Curro Century City High School unable to speak a single word of English. Today, he is among the school’s top achievers, boasting an impressive 82,57% average, five subject distinctions, and a place in the IEB’s top 1% for mathematics.

For Zhongwei, the transition was daunting. With all instruction delivered in English, the language posed a significant hurdle. But instead of seeing it as an insurmountable obstacle, he viewed it as “a wall that blocks my growth” – one that could be broken down with determination and strategy.

The path to fluency

Zhongwei’s approach was both strategic and immersive. “What worked for me was listening to more English and speaking more. I also tried to think in English,” he explains. However, conversational English was only part of the challenge.

“Speaking English and academic English are totally different,” he notes. To bridge the gap, he dedicated himself to practising past exam papers, watching English TV series, and engaging in conversations with friends – turning every moment into an opportunity to learn.

The hard work paid off. Zhongwei earned distinctions in five subjects, including scores above 90% in two, and secured a prestigious spot in the IEB’s top 1% for mathematics. He credits much of his success to the unwavering support and patience of his teachers. “To get top marks, you can never do it without their support,” he acknowledges.

Recognition and wisdom for the future

In recognition of his outstanding achievements and resilience, Zhongwei was awarded the Head of High School Award for the Class of 2025. Throughout his journey, he carried the wise words of his father close to heart: “Do it and strive and do not delay because the outcome will be better than your expectation.”

For others facing their own challenges, Zhongwei’s advice is clear: “Never be afraid because a challenge also leads to growth. Smooth seas never make skilful sailors. The most important advice is to always feel confident and never doubt your abilities. If you believe in yourself, you will realise your full potential.”

Looking ahead

Now pursuing chemistry at the University of Cape Town, Zhongwei views his past obstacles not as barriers but as lessons.

For him, the language wall didn’t just crack, it came down completely. His story is a powerful reminder that with determination, support, and self-belief, no challenge is too great.
