Youth champion penguin conservation through creative workshop

Learners from Portland Primary School in Mitchells Plain have turned their love for nature into action after taking part in an education workshop on Tuesday, 15 April.

The project, run by Uthando (Love) South Africa working with SANCCOB and the Mark Jeneker Foundation, saw 19 learners join a hands-on penguin conservation workshop.

During the session, children learned about challenges facing critically endangered African penguins and other seabirds. The workshop made a clear impact, with SANCCOB presenters giving the school a beautiful penguin-themed artwork as a lasting reminder of their visit.

Global showcase for local talent

The learners’ original artworks will be displayed at this year’s World Travel Market Africa, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The artworks will be sold at auction, with all money raised going to SANCCOB’s conservation work protecting African penguins and coastal birds.

Call for continued support

Organisations interested in similar educational projects or donating art supplies are encouraged to contact Uthando (Love) South Africa through their website at www.uthandosa.org or reach out to project manager, Roshana Naidoo.
