Twins Shane and Sheldon Pretorius from Goodwood are in their element because of their role in the World of Dance competition.

World of Dance (WOD) is an international dance competition that takes place once a year around the world. This year however they did not just have the qualifiers for WOD as there was a stage competition as well.

Apex dance crew, Led by Shane and Sheldon, was allowed to host the WOD battles for Cape Town.

The battles delivered no qualifier this year, but hopefully, this will be the first of many to come and will potentially lead to a qualifier to represent Cape Town nationally and then internationally.

The role of the Merriman Lions Club

The role these two Merriman Lions Club members played was hosting the battles. They organized the sound, judges, DJ, prizes and much more to ensure their part of the event ran smoothly.

Apex dance crew has worked and still works with the Merriman Lions club in Goodwood, however, this was not a Lions project but an independent one done by the Apex crew. Merriman Lions club was one of the sponsors of prizes.

This event was sponsored by a few great local businesses such as a custom T-shirt print and design by Pò Designs and Kim Square, a cash prize sponsored by Merriman Lions Club, and a full body massage voucher from Rainbow Home, an associate of the Merriman Lions club.

Creating a platform for others

“I don’t think we ever had the battles done here before and if we did, it happened a long time ago. But this one was held for the culture by culture for the freestyle community of dancers in Cape Town,” Shane Winston Pretorius said.

According to Pretorius, with the Covid-19 restrictions being lifted, they are allowed to move more freely, which helped the WOD organizers to move forward to host the event.

Pretorius said he had the privilege to meet and be mentored by some of Cape Towns’ finest to be where he is now on the floor and importantly off the floor.

According to the Pretorius twins, themselves, along with their team members, are just trying to do their part and create platforms for those who thought there is nothing.

The street dance community in Cape Town is filled with love and a high level of passion for this style of art that we all love called dance!
