Amid the chaos, bullets and stones of the recent taxi strike that crippled the city, a 61-year-old woman from Khayelitsha refused to stay away and embarked on a 25 km walk to get to her place of work in Brackenfell.
Ethel (surname withheld at her request) was one of thousands of Capetonians who took to the highways on foot to get to and from work last week.
She set off from home in the early morning, despite her employer’s hefty objections, and arrived at work in the afternoon, where she was accommodated for the duration of the strike.
Courages and resilient
This feat left Ethel’s employer and colleagues at a hair salon spellbound and in awe. News of her long walk quickly spread, and many people have come along to salute her for her courage, resilience and commitment.
She was presented with a symbolic gold medal as well as new pair of shoes.
Ethel said she was terrified to travel, but knew it was important to get to work.
“My boss messaged me the whole time to find out where I was and if I was okay. She helps a lot in the communities where people struggle, so it was great to be able to give back to her and show her my loyalty and gratitude.
“When I got to work she arranged for me to sleep on the premises for three nights. She made sure I was comfortable and had enough food so I would not have to make my way all the way back again, especially when it was so dangerous.
“Her resolute commitment, loyalty and responsibility in the face of chaos and obstacles is astonishing she is truly amazing,” her employer Sonja Vos said. “We didn’t expect this of her, but she would not stay away. This is an inspiring testament to unwavering dedication and determination.”
Powerful example
Her colleagues and members of the community agree that everyone can learn from this. “Her actions serve as a powerful example of the strength of the human spirit,” Vos said, “and how a single individual’s determination can inspire a community to come together in support and admiration.
“Her footsteps, echoing through the streets, symbolise not only a personal achievement, but also a triumph of the human spirit that transcends the boundaries of age and circumstance,” she says. “As we reflect on this incredible journey may we all be inspired to embrace challenges with the same unwavering determination and loyalty.”
