Lee Swanepoel and Luke India Ramos, judges at the WPMCA.

A judge from the Western Province Majorettes and Cheerleading Association, Luke India Ramos, is opening the door for boys who are interested in joining Majorettes.

Luke India Ramos is affiliated with a majorette’s association – the Western Province Majorettes and Cheerleading Association (WPMCA). “I am an adjudicator and branched out to coaching earlier this year.”

Currently, Ramos has a junior team that he is adopting from another coach in Brooklyn. “Majorettes in South Africa is a predominately female sport, but it was recently opened up to males too, so to ‘honour’ my younger self, I am looking to create a platform for younger boys who want to engage in this sport,” says Ramos.

According to Ramos, he is starting from scratch. “I don’t even have a name yet so nothing is set in stone yet. If there is enough interest, then I will know what I am working with and can start putting things in place, but for now, I can confirm that the team is open to boys in high school in the northern suburbs areas, no experience is needed.”

Ramos explains that the northern suburbs are big – “I am looking at Kuils River, Brackenfell, Durbanville, Bellville, Belhar, Elsies River, Goodwood, Parow, Panorama, Plattekloof, Edgemead, and Century City, to name a few.”
