The Belhar Wellness Group Recently celebrated their four-year anniversary.

The group was established by the current chair, Lillian Brown, in August 2018.

From an initial group of eight members focusing on fitness exercises, the group has increased its membership to a current total of 86 members, consisting primarily of those in the age group 60 – 70 plus.

One male member has also joined the group this year.

Whilst the group initially started at the Belhar Methodist Church, the group is open to members of all denominations.

Members get together for two hours every Tuesday and Thursday at the Belhar Indoor Sports Centre for a programme that focuses on spiritual devotions, fitness exercises and line-dancing.

Daphne Kayster, spokesperson of the group, says they strive to provide a holistic health and wellness environment for senior citizens to socialise and have fellowship with fellow senior citizens.

“We take part in light exercises to build up muscle strength, do line-dancing as a safe form of exercise, engage in meaningful and healthy lifestyle discussions, have access to blood pressure and blood sugar measurement, serve the community through donations of care packages and participate in affordable outdoor activities and day trips,” says Kayster.

The group’s next events are the Spring Day Walk on 1 September and the Spar Women’s Virtual Challenge on 3 September.
