Matrics of Durbanville schools have reason to be proud of their final exam results.

A total of 41 350 matrics in the Western Cape passed, which brings the overall pass rate to 81.5%. The national pass rate is 78.2%.

Fairmont High School is top of the crop this year, boasting three learners among the top 20 in the Western Cape.

They are Kelly Zeng (95.9%), Jessie Midgley (95.3%) and Megan van Schalkwyk (94.1%).

The school had a 99.6% pass rate (247 out of 248 matrics) and an 89.5% bachelor’s pass rate. A total of 50 learners achieved A aggregates, 18 candidates got seven A’s, and 493 subject A’s were achieved, of which the most – a total of 82 – were achieved in Afrikaans First Additional Language.

Megan achieved 100% for Business Studies and 99% for Mathematics. Kelly achieved 99% for IT and 96% for English. Other achievers were James Burness (93.9%), Tallulah Glasby (92.7%), Emily Willson (92.3%), Emily Dancig (91.4%), Charne le Grange (90.9%) and Travis Walker (90.7%).

Kelly told TygerBurger she will be studying Medicine at Stellenbosch University this year. She said it was important to understand the work by teaching herself and explaining the work to herself.

Jessie will be doing a BSc in Human Life Sciences at Stellenbosch University to pursue a career in genetics.

Megan will be studying BCom International Business at Stellenbosch University.

Stellenberg High School achieved a 100% pass rate, with two matrics among the top 20 in the Western Cape.

A total of 36 matrics achieved an overall A average. Three matrics achieved eight A’s and 13 achieved seven A’s.

The top achiever was Jacques Wust with 95.33%. He was also awarded as the top student in IT in the Western Cape.

Other top achievers were Karla Hanekom (94.67%) and Déandré de Meyer (93.17%).

Jacques and Karla were both among the top 20 in the Western Cape.

Durbanville High School excelled with 32 A aggregates. The school was also awarded as the school in the Western Cape that showed the greatest improvement in the average for English Home Language compared to their subject average in 2017.

The top overall achievers were Danelle van Hoogstraaten (93.43%), Kobus Jordaan (92.43%), Alexa le Roux (92.43%), Anri Klopper (91.43%), Silke Hellmann (90.57%) and Loki Loubser (90%).

Curro Independent School also boasted top results in the IEB (Independent Examination Board) matric examination.

The top learner was Ralph McDougall, who achieved 100% for Mathematics and eight distinctions. He came within the top 1% for the IEB exams nationally and was third in the country.

He will be studying Electronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University.

His advice to this year’s matrics is to work hard every day to stay on top of their work.

Joanie Thom (86.7%) was second at the school with seven distinctions.

She was among the top 20 achievers in the country.

She will be studying Veterinary Science at University of Pretoria this year.

Other achievers were Michelle Boersma (83.4%) with five distinctions and Joshua Sadie (82.7%) with six distinctions.
