A motorist seen resisting arrest and assaulting a City of Cape Town traffic officer in a video circulating on social media has been arrested on multiple criminal charges, the City of Cape Town confirmed this morning.

The video shows the man displaying aggressive behaviour towards the officer who had pulled him over.

“The City’s traffic services can confirm that on Monday, 29 September, one of its officers observed a Honda FRV being driven recklessly on the N1 outbound, approaching the Durban Road bridge. The officer stopped the vehicle and engaged with the driver, who became aggressive and refused to comply with the officer’s instructions,” City traffic services spokesperson Kevin Jacobs told TygerBurger.

“Law enforcement and police officers arrived on the scene to assist. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless and negligent driving, and assault. He was detained at Bellville police station. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident.”

The City’s Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, strongly condemned the attack.

“The City condemns this incident in the strongest possible terms. Attacks on our staff have become far too common, and the perpetrators should be ashamed. Our officers work incredibly hard, often under difficult conditions, to uphold law and order and protect our communities,” he said.

“For them to be disrespected and targeted in this way is completely unacceptable. We trust that the suspect will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law to send a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated.”
