Volunteers haul 511 kg of litter on International Coastal Clean-up Day

Toddlers and grandparents joined forces to clean up the coastline.

Lagoon Beach in Milnerton came alive on International Coastal Clean-up Day as volunteers, families, schools and community groups joined Save a Fishie for a morning dedicated to protecting the environment. With the support of generous sponsors, the team collected 511 kg of litter, ranging from microplastics and lollipop sticks to nappies, broken glass, syringes and clothing.

The event showcased the power of collaboration, with Pick n Pay partnering as the main sponsor for the day, alongside Sasko and its mascot, Sasko Sam, and Don’t Waste, which ensured all litter was taken for recycling.

Regular supporters Plastics SA provided the signature yellow refuse bags that have become a symbol of the initiative’s success.

A growing clean-up family

What began as a small initiative has now grown into a thriving community movement.

This year’s clean-up drew toddlers, learners from schools youth from MyStudentHouse, parents, grandparents and first-time volunteers, all eager to make a difference. Zoë Prinsloo from Save a Fishie referred to the group of regular helpers as their “A-Team” and celebrated the many new faces who joined for the first time.

Volunteers were rewarded for their hard work with goodie bags from Pick n Pay, which included a recycled plastic pencil case, fruit, snacks, water and boerewors rolls as well as lucky-draw vouchers. Sasko added to the festive spirit with fresh bread and live music, while a long list of local businesses and organisations donated prizes ranging from vouchers and photo shoots to eco-friendly products and even a mid-week fishing trip.

Inspiration for the future

Organisers reminded participants that while International Coastal Clean-up Day came only once a year the impact of community action extended far beyond a single event.

“Our actions ripple far into the future, for our children and their children,” Prinsloo said. “We hope such clean-ups will inspire even more people to join our regular efforts and make a lasting difference.”
